How oils can support you through grief and loss
I hadn't intended to write a post around grief and loss just yet. I felt it was one of those topics I would work up to as there were a few others I wanted to share about first.
However, as we know, life doesn't always play along with the way we think and sometimes things happen that make us realise that the 'right time' may just be now. So here I am, feeling drawn to share how these beautiful oils have been supporting me following the loss of my beloved Mum just a few weeks ago.
I've been using doTERRA essential oils daily for months now, but the support they've given me in recent weeks has been surprising and beautiful.
This post may seem a little self indulgent because I'm sharing my own experience and discussing a number of oils, however, while it's deep and personal to me, I share in the hope that my experience may also offer support for others.
About 6 weeks ago, Mum had a fall and sustained some injuries. We were told due to her age and frailty that she was unlikely to survive more than a few days. Mum has often gone to the beat of her own drum though and it appeared she wasn't having any of that 'won't survive more than a few days' stuff and was going to hang out a little longer.
This is where the oils started to come in. I have taken to carrying some with me wherever I go. Not a huge number for day to day, just a few of my favourites as well as those that can be handy for things unforeseen, such as Peppermint for a headache or unsettled stomach or the Motivate blend for which the name is self explanatory!
I was at work when I received news of Mum's fall and it was a few hours before more information came through about her injuries and outlook. During that time, I opened the tiny travel dram of Balance oil from my little travel everywhere stash and had it on my desk.
With a drop on the sole of each foot where it is absorbed within seconds and the aroma from the oil on my desk, it helped to soothe and settle, easing the feelings of worry and stress so that I felt I could cope with whatever came next.
I travelled down to see Mum and found so much comfort in the oils while I was flying the first leg of the trip and later driving the 8 hours for the final leg of the trip to my home town.
I have a roller bottle with a blend of Patchouli, Lavender and Wild Orange oils I simply like the smell of but they all have therapeutic elements too. So I sat sniffing this roller bottle on take off and for the first part of the flight until I settled. On the drive the next day, I also put some Wild Orange oil in a little USB diffuser that is excellent for in the car.
These blends kept me going over the few days I was there. I opened the window in Mum's room and took the lid off the bottle of Wild Orange oil to freshen the nursing home smell that can sometimes be a little overwhelming for those with sensitive noses.
Mum was quite restless at times and a drop of Lavender and Easy Air (also known as Breathe) on her pillow soothed and settled her.
I took a small diffuser with me which I used at night and found a blend of Easy Air, Lavender and Wild Orange helped with a sound sleep, something that often escapes me.
Leaving Mum to travel home again is always hard, but this time more so because I didn't know if this was going to be the last time I saw her. Many tears in the car park and on the drive back to my family, where thankfully I had a couple of days to spend time with them before flying back to where I live. The oils got a workout the whole way!
Less than a week later, the phone call came to say she'd deteriorated significantly and this was the beginning of the end. I flew out the same day and again, found myself sniffing the oils for much of the flight. I was also using the oil Console which I found comforting. This oil has been used constantly since then. It's great on it's own and also blends well with Wild Orange.
I was only 2 hours into the drive when I received the news Mum was gone. Needless to say, lots of tears, a few extra stops and a very deep gratitude for these oils that were doing an amazing job of supporting and comforting me.
I have continued to use them daily, through funeral planning, the funeral itself, sorting Mum's belongings and clearing her room in the nursing home, the inevitable but lovely family reunions and the return to the normality of life which is different to what it was before.
Who'd have thought that such a thing as essential oils could offer so much.
