Lets talk about oily goodness...

Essential oils... have you ever used them? Like many people, they have been a part of my life in one form or another for as long as I can remember. Remedies and uses passed on through the ages from grandmother to mother and aunts, then passed down to me and my sister.

Some purely for their scents, others for health, wellness and household uses. A few drops of lavender sprinkled on a pillow for a sound sleep; eucalyptus to help with a cold or snuffly nose, use as a disinfectant or rinse aid; tea tree oil for everything under the sun, particularly when it came to cuts and grazes; peppermint oil to help keep the tiny little kitchen ants away; a drop of clove oil on a cotton bud cautiously applied for a toothache (you sure don't want to taste that stuff!!) and beautiful neroli used as a scent.

I've always loved and incorporated them into my life somehow, mostly without too much thought. My sister has a background in natural therapies, my Mum did reflexology, and I've always been into growing my own herbs mostly because I loved the different smells but also their many uses. I even completed an aromatherapy course about 12 years ago. Alas, over time much of that knowledge was forgotten as life became full with other challenges.

Then a few months ago, I came across doTERRA essential oils through a friend. The more I heard about these oils, the more interested I became and it wasn't too long before I started trying them for myself.

To be honest I can be rather skeptical at times, particularly of things that seem to be a fad. So although I was interested, I was a little slower sharing them as I wanted to get to know them intimately myself first. To know if and how they could help me, to know their scents and what appealed and what didn't - this was a big one for me given I've always been sensitive to different smells and many perfumes give me terrible headaches. To then be able to share my experiences with these oils authentically.

I have now gathered quite a collection of oils... a collection that seems to be growing as I explore. I love them. I love their purity, their potency and also their gentleness. I love their scents - not all of them as some can be a little harsh on the nostrils or senses such as oregano oil, but when blended with a carrier oil or with other oils, it can make them more pleasant.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these oils, trying out different oils to improve and maintain my own health and wellness. I've loved mixing some of my own blends and find that a lot of fun.

I was visiting family last week and after a family dinner, the women were gathered together chatting which morphed into some serious essential oil sniffing, much to the amusement of a couple of my sons who also joined in.

Do I have any favourites? Indeed I do! But where to start? I struggle to have just one favourite of anything and oils are no different. My current favourites are ice blue for back ache (or any ache for that matter), this stuff is gold! I don't go anywhere without it.

Sleep has often been elusive for me over the years, but diffusing easy air and lavender has me sleeping much sounder than I have done in a long while. Then there are the scents I like just because... I often have a blend of patchouli, wild orange and lavender diffusing and have also made up a roller ball so I can enjoy this as a perfume as well.

My eldest granddaughter is 10 and was curious about them a few days ago. However, while she was curious and liked some of them, her main thought was how weird her grandmother was! Have to love a little weirdness eh? My second granddaughter is 5 and loves them. Over and over she wanted to check each oil out. I loved her interest and the fact she already has distinct favourites.

My thought with this blog is to share my love of oils and how they can support health and wellness, both on a physical and emotional level including the many other uses they have in our everyday life.
